Bonvini 1909

Milan – sounds like a little industrial version of Rome. Actually, this city very unique. Nobody cares much about its look and rather enjoy life like in any other Italian city. You’ll find the opulence here more on the plate than in the streets. All that beauty is hidden in the shadows of the factory chimneys. The raw glamour can be enhanced by nooks and crannies you wouldn’t really expect, and also shops that reflect the old charm of prosperity.

One of these hidden gems in Milan is Cartoleria Bonvini 1909. A shop and lithography workshop following in the tradition of the fratelli Bonvini. A space relegated to the suburban area but situated in an ideal location near the Fondazione Prada gallery. We had the privilege to meet there with the owner Luca Mariani, who guards everything here with a careful legacy. As well as his collection of typewriters. He showed us all the historical motifs used by the brothers and which the brand Bonvini continues to use for greeting and compliment cards. And to our delight, he also let us take his picture. Right in the papeteria.

It is no wonder that the place is still very popular. In addition to tasteful stationery, you’ll also find a variety of art projects and a small bookstore here. There is something for everyone. And we didn’t leave empty-handed either. Thank you, Bonvini, for such a shelter. But we need to tell you something: After leaving we were caught in an incredible storm. The wind carried all the sand of Milan’s rawness and also nearly carried us away.

We held our paper bags as tightly as we could and that’s how we saved them. Who knows, maybe the beauty hidden inside will eventually reach you too, along with the northern Italian wind.
